opal / opalite

opal is an amorphous form of silica, chemically similar to quartz, but containing 3% to 21% water within its mineral structure. it is also called the queen of gems. main opal mines are in australia and ethiopia but other countries like USA, mexico, central europe also mine them. opalite is the synthetic version of opal and it is manmade.
